How to Choose a Rug for Your Home | Armadillo & Co

We get it, choosing a rug is a big decision. They’re one of the more expensive purchases for your home and it’s important you choose something that you’re ready to have around for the long-haul. Don’t worry, we’ve got your back. Here are a few helpful tips from the team to help you choose the perfect Armadillo & Co rug for your home. Once you know the location of the rug, the important decisions of placement, colour and size will follow suit.

Level of Traffic

When choosing a rug it’s important to consider the use of the space where you plan on placing the rug. Do you need a rug that’s tough enough to handle lots of foot traffic in a busy thoroughfare or a bedroom? Or do you love a little luxury and want your rug to be soft underfoot? Once this is defined, the correct material and fibres can be chosen to ensure your rug is well-suited to the space.

Our most popular rug in the Armadillo & Co collection, the  Sierra Weave is a low traffic rug. Fantastic for bedrooms and formal living rooms, it’s simple, elegant and sumptuously soft.

The Sherpa Weave is part of the wool range and a high traffic rug. It’s hard wearing and textural, the flecks compliment well with other colours in a room adding warmth and texture.

The Braid Weave is a subtly textured circular rug adding understated elegance to any space. It’s versatile round shape and very strong backing makes it ideal for high traffic areas like entrance ways, bedrooms and living rooms.

The Kalahari Weave is a mixture of thick and sturdy hemp and luxuriously soft wool perfect for high traffic areas in your home. The balance between textures creates a wonderfully soft rug underfoot. It comes in three colourways and five sizes.

Rug Placement

Understanding the placement of your rug will help with size and colour decisions. Here’s some tried and tested room layouts to help you achieve a design that flows well and is pleasing on the eye. For a more comprehensive placement guide, join the Hunting for George Home School.

Bedroom
Smaller rugs are often used in bedrooms. They can be placed on each or just one side of the bed, creating a soft, warm place from which to step in and out of bed. For a more luxurious look, place a large rug underneath the bed with a generous amount visible at the foot and sides. Keep bedside tables off the rug to highlight the floor and enhance the feeling of space. We recommend something with a beautifully soft texture like the Sierra Weave, or something from the latest hand-woven collection, the Latitude Collection.

Junior Bedroom
As well as adding softness, rugs can add colour and whimsy to children’s rooms. Tuck the rug slightly under the bed to ensure little feet can find it easily. In a shared bedroom, place the rug between the beds to visually connect them and create a central play space. Smaller round rugs work well in nurseries under or next to cribs or make smaller spaces feel intimate and playful. The Sierra Weave range has some beautifully soft pastels as well as neutral colour ways. It also happens to be the softest rug going round, perfect for the little ones to sit and play for hours on end.

Living Room
To pull together a living area, choose a rug large enough to sit fully or halfway under couches with any side chairs sitting partially or fully on the rug. Modular seating looks best when placed entirely on a rug with at least 20cm of rug visible behind. If you prefer to have a small rug, arrange the seating an even distance from it. Opt for a durable rug like the Kalahari Weave or Drift Weave, both are a mix of hemp and wool.

Dining Room
The best size under a dining table is about 60-70cm wider all round and in proportion to the table, accommodating chairs when people are seated. Place a round rug under a round table to accentuate the table shape and enhance the room’s overall design. For the dining room we’d recommend anything made from hemp, in particular the Nest Weave or River Weave. A benefit of hemp as a primary material is its durability, also its ability to soften under foot over time.

Entrance
When choosing a rug for an entrance way Armadillo & Co have a great selection of runners. Runners make a powerful statement piece and are the perfect way to define a long hallway. If you don’t have a hallway, Armadillo & Co’s collection of entrance mats are also a great addition to any entry and an ideal way to welcome guests into your home.

Indoor/Outdoor
People don’t often think about having rugs outdoors but the Armadillo & Co Indoor Outdoor collection is an amazing way to bring a rug outside. Made from recyclable PET but with the the quality and texture of all Armadillo & Co rugs (it definitely doesn’t feel like plastic!), these rugs can go next to pools or in indoor/outdoor entertaining areas. The range can get wet, is salt resistant, chlorine resistant and is extremely hard wearing and durable.

Colour

An equally important decision to make is whether you want something to stand out and make a statement, or something neutral to compliment your floor colouring and bring together the room. With lots of different colours and patterns to choose from, here are some of our favourite Armadillo & Co options to get you started.

Size

When deciding on the size of your rug, it is always recommended to choose the largest rug possible while still leaving space between the rug and the walls to highlight the flooring. This will make the room feel spacious, inviting and well-designed.
